5 Diabetes Superfoods

5 Diabetes Superfoods - Alma Health

Having advised hundreds of patients with diabetes, we have compiled 5 of the best foods to eat!

These superfoods have a low glycemic index; they gradually raise your blood sugar, without dangerous spikes.

It is important to remember portion control whenever you eat anything! Even if something is healthy, eating too much can stop you from managing your weight.

Berries are not only delicious, but they are very nutritious! They come in a variety of shapes and colors, and they each have distinct flavors. No matter the kind you choose, they are all rich in nutrients, including potassium, fiber, and vitamin C. They reduce inflammation, improve insulin resistance, and lower your risk of cancer and heart disease.

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are rich in fiber and are a great source of vitamin C, most B vitamins, iron, selenium, and calcium. They are also rich in beta-carotene, which is converted to vitamin A in the body.

In order to get the full benefits of sweet potatoes, choose boiling over baking. Baking sweet potatoes will raise their glycemic index and make them less nutritious.

Nuts provide a variety of benefits! For example, walnuts contain omega-3 fatty acids, almonds are a good source of vitamin E, riboflavin, and are high in protein and fiber. Most nuts lower bad cholesterol.

Just make sure to eat them raw instead of salted. Eating too much salt can lead to heart disease.

Bell Peppers

Bell peppers come in a variety of colors. They are all rich in vitamin C and vitamin A. Red bell peppers have an additional benefit; they contain lycopene, an antioxidant that helps your body remain strong and healthy.

Tomatoes are delicious and can be used in cooking, salads, or enjoyed raw as a snack. They are rich in lycopene, vitamin C, folate, vitamin K, and potassium.

Make sure to eat tomatoes raw and cooked to get all the benefits they provide. Raw tomatoes are higher in vitamin C, and cooked tomatoes are higher in lycopene.

Research also shows that men who consume canned or cooked tomatoes have a lower risk of prostate cancer! So go ahead, get cooking!
